This page is dedicated to the Waimārama School Mosaic Project. This project was made possible by a grant from the Ministry of Education under the auspices of the "Creatives in Schools" programme. The goal is to teach the students the art of making mosaics and to also create a work that is based on local stories and that will be installed on the school grounds. The senior children have spent almost a week learning about mosaics and they have created the works shown below. They had complete artistic freedom, but had to do the bulk of the work themselves, such as cutting the tiles and using appropriate adhesive to mount on substrates supplied by Leonardus Mosaics. Due to the messy nature of grouting, that part as well as the framing was completed by Leonardus Mosaics. Each work measures approximately 300mm x 300mm. The senior students got to take these home along with a certificate detailing their learnings.
Phase two involved making four panels based on inspiration from the senior students. The inspiration came from local stories, which will be shown here at a later stage. For now, the completed panels are shown below. These panels measure 1440mm x 500mm. The senior students also supplied the star shaped elements on two of the panels.
Phase three involved the juniors making mosaics on circular substrate. The seniors prepared the substrate and were in charge of the grouting. even the teachers got involved in making a mosaic, as well as one of the parents. All the circle s have a diameter of approximately 28cm.
The final phase involved installation of the works on the swimming pool fence
